Colourpop Lux Lipstick|Worth It??

So if you didn’t know by now, I’m somewhat of a Colourpop fiend. My introduction to the Santa Monica based cosmetics brand started last spring. I was in my spring semester of undergrad and had been introduced to Colourpop by one of my good friends, Voon Chi. I remember noticing how good her eyeshadow looked one day and complemented her on it and she raved about the quality of Colourpop’s products and how decently priced they are. My obsession with this brand didn’t start until last August, when I really started to explore in makeup. It’s also not a coincidence that I made my first order shortly after I started working full time at the clinic (there’s nothing like spending that hard earned $$ on good bargains, amirite?!).

Colourpop sells exclusively on their website (with some of their products selling at Sephora and Ulta). Aside from the fact that the website is easy to navigate and is aesthetically pleasing, let’s talk about the prices of their products. Their liquid lipsticks usually sell for $6 (even less when it’s on sale) most of their products don’t sell for more than $20. Add their unbeatable prices to high quality products and you’ve got yourself something special! I could rave on and on, but here’s my honest review of their Lux Lipsticks.

The Lux Lipstick is the new type of lipstick that Colourpop launched at the end of January. In the classic bullet form, the formula is a “lux blend, with a creamy to matte finish”. So what does this mean? The lux blend refers to the formula blend of acai, pomegranate, and jojoba seed butters to keep your lips hydrated. Upon application, this lipstick glides easily on the lips, feels creamy and has a matte finish on the lips. The rose-gold imprinted star packaging is also what makes this lipstick so lux! Colourpop Lux Lipstick retails for $7 a piece and comes in 33 different shades, so no matter what skin color you are, there is a color that will work for you!

My first purchase of the Lux Lipsticks include the colors: Layover, 27, Friends, and Getty. Read on for the swatches and my opinions of each lipstick!

LAYOVER

Layover is described as a “medium rosy beige” and it is a good My Lips But Better shade for me. For reference: I have a medium dark skin tone and wear the shade Neutral Tan in the Bare Minerals Matte Mineral Foundation. While I love this shade, the only thing that I don’t like about this shade is that it is a little drying, especially if my lips are even slightly chapped. Other than that, I see myself using this lipstick until it’s gone, I would just have to prep my lips first!

27

Now 27 is hands down my favorite lux lipstick out of the four I bought (and I like them all!). Described as a “deep plummy beige”, 27 is a versatile color because it varies in intensity depending on how you apply it. To achieve that almost-nude-but-just-enough-color look, all you gotta do is dab on your lips; you can top it with a gloss if you’re feeling a lil extra! For that badass-lady-that-slays-everyday look, all you really need is a couple of swipes and the full color pigmentation will be reached. This lipstick is truly brown-girl friendly and may even be a nude lipstick for some people. The color payoff is there, impressive for just one swipe and will stay for most of the day.Every time I’ve worn this to work and school, I’ve gotten compliments, so I know this color will never fail me!

Friends

Friends is a “rich brown” and an homage to the brown lipsticks that were popular back in the 90s. I tend to gravitate towards brown tones when it comes to lipstick, so I wasn’t surprised on how much I love this lipstick! This lux lipstick is one of those colors that you put on like armor: wear it and be prepared to feel empowered. It’s dark enough to give off grungy vibes and sophistication at the same time. For me, this lipstick had the smoothest application out of the four lipsticks I bought. The color payoff is amazing, even with one swipe and it lasts all day, no smudging!

Getty is the first lipstick I purchased where the color is out of the normal range of nude and berry colors I normally go for. Getty is a “deepened teal” and boy is it BOLD! I was really surprised to see how much this color suited me because it was out of my comfort zone. Well it’s good to go out of your comfort zone and try something new! While I wouldn’t wear this lipstick for work, I could already see myself wearing it for going out and dancing with friends. Some things I don’t really like about this lipstick is that it does stain your lips, so keep a cleansing balm or oil on standby when removing makeup. I also think application would be a lot easier if you had a lip liner. I don’t own any lip liners, so I just lined with the lipstick; with bullet form and steady hands, it is doable.

Overall, I recommend Colourpop’s Lux Lipsticks to anyone looking to try new lip products and lipstick lovers everywhere! With the pigmentation, smooth blend, and unbeatable price of $7, you really can’t go wrong. If you can’t decide on a color, just browse through the website because the swatches are shown on light, medium, and dark skin tones. So that concludes my review, I should probably curb my enthusiasm about these lipsticks because I don’t need to make another purchase (yet) and I’m saving to upgrade my camera!

Until next time,

Samantha
